Every season for the last decade, the Movistar Team will start their 2017 with the Tour Down Under (17-22 January), the opening race of the UCI WorldTour, which includes six stages - two of them short mountain-top finishes, in Paracombe (Wednesday 18) and Old Willunga Hill (Saturday 21) - suited for sprinters and explosive climbers. Movistar’s Alex Dowsett claimed a fantastic fifth British TT title in Stockton-on-Tees, becoming the first-ever rider to go past Stuart Dangerfield's record of four victories. The 46.4km course was another exhibition by the Essex rider (55:38.523), coming 1'16" faster across the line than James Gullen (silver), with Ryan Perry in bronze medal position. Alex Dowsett smashes British 25 mile TT record.

Movistar professional Alex Dowsett smashed the British 25-mile time trial competition record on Sunday morning, recording 44-29.

The previous record of 45-43 held by Matt Bottrill was broken by over a minute in the ECCA Championships in Cambridgeshire on the E2/E5 course near Newmarket.

Dowsett averaged 33.7mph (54.2kmph) on the A14 Newmarket bypass to become the first rider to break the 45 minute barrier for the distance.

Nairo Quintana (Movistar) won stage three of the Volta a Catalunya on Wednesday in an explosive finale at the ski resort of Vallter 2000 near Girona. Once again, Bradley Wiggins (Sky) rode aggressively to put pressure on his rivals.

Quintana's Movistar team-mate Valverde placed second at six seconds, with Joaquim Rodriguez (Katusha) in third and Wiggins in fourth at the same time.

Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) won the prologue time trial of the 2013 Ruta Del Sol in Spain on Sunday.

Valverde cruised around the six kilometre circuit two seconds ahead of  second-placed Simon Spilak (Katusha), and four seconds ahead of Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Sharp) in third and Jurgen Van Den Broeck (Lotto-Belisol) in fourth.
